PROJECT DISCOVERY - ALEXANDRIA NATALIE SANKS VAUGHN COLLEGE BOOK SCHOLARSHIP Application 2018

This scholarship is given in memory of Mrs. Natalie S. Vaughn. Mrs. Vaughn was born and raised in Alexandria, Virginia and in 1982 she retired as an elementary school principal with the City of Alexandria. Mrs. Vaughn was a dedicated educator and adored her students, parents and teachers and was a life long activist in community service organizations.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

The applicant must be a Project Discovery – Alexandria participant and must satisfactorily complete all program requirements.
The applicant must be a graduating high school senior from T.C.WilliamsHigh School in Alexandria, Virginia at the time of application submission.
Prior to final selection the successful applicant must be able to provide a letter of acceptance from an accredited university or college or a copy of an application to an accredited university or college if not yet accepted.

SELECTION CRITERIA:
Applicants will be selected based upon all of the following:

The applicant shall pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education, History, Sociology or Fine Arts.
Scholastic achievement (e.g. AP/Honors classes)
Grade point average, SAT, or ACT scores
Character and leadership (e.g. extra curricular involvement, honors, awards, achievements, team sports, personal references)
Essay responses (communication skills, personal insight)
Demonstrate a strong commitment to Community Service: outline your community service involvement in the local community within the past two years.

SCHOLARSHIP GUIDELINES

Applications must be submitted electronically via this survey by Friday, April 27, 2018.
One letter of recommendation will be required from independent sources such as a teacher, administrator, guidance counselor, coach, employer or community leader. Letters can not be written by a Project Discovery coordinator or relative. Letters should address and reference the student’s academic performance, positive character and the potential to be a productive college student and further their involvement with community service. Letters should be emailed to hajie.sesay@alexandriava.gov by 5 p.m. on April 27, 2018.
Staff will review applications for completeness and will then distribute to committee members for review and scoring.
